Phillip K Smith, III (American, 1972 - )

Along side artists Pae White, Jim Isermann, Jorge Pardo, and Karim Rashid, Phillip K Smith III explores and redefines the edges and intersections of fine art, architecture and design. Born in Los Angeles and a graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Fine Arts, Smith III is already an award winning designer and an acclaimed architect. He continues to push the boundaries and confront the ideas of modernist design, while utilizing new technologies to further his artistic practice. Commissioned to create over half a dozen monumental public artworks in the last 3 years from California to Kansas City, Smith's work was featured in the 2008 Annual Review in Art in America. In the spring of 2009, his first solo gallery exhibition, "Line to Line" was installed at Royale Projects. By the end of 2009, the 55' tall fiberglass sculpture, "Inhale/Exhale," and the 12' tall steel tube sculpture, "Clarity," will both be installed at the University of La Verne, just north of Pomona, CA. Additionally, in early 2010, Smith will be installing his sculpture, "Where the Earth and the Sky Meet," on the shared front lawn of City Hall and the Museum of Art in Oklahoma City, OK.
